21 Game: When the Right Answer Is “Not with These Rules”

Check a number-card target against the allowed operations. A total that looks close can still be impossible when every card must be used once.

The warm-up uses three number cards: 10, 7 and 4. Every card must be used exactly once, and addition is the only permitted operation. A target of 21 is straightforward. When the host changes the target to 20, a learner reaches for a subtraction sign that the activity never supplied.

Keep the permissions fixed

Adding the three cards gives 21. Changing their order does not change that sum. Under these particular instructions, there is no way to obtain 20. The learner does not need a more imaginative arrangement; the permitted operations are insufficient for that target.

Subtracting one, ignoring a card or using part of a printed number would alter the problem. Each might belong to a different exercise if announced in advance. None is a hidden permission that should be invented simply because the current target is inconvenient.

Explain impossibility constructively

The learner writes the total and names the restrictions. That is a complete answer to whether the target can be reached under the stated conditions. The host should not mark it as a lack of effort while secretly expecting an operation that was forbidden.

For another round, change either the cards or the permissions explicitly. Keep the old task beside the new one so the reason for the changed answer is visible. A good number-card challenge rewards reading the conditions as carefully as manipulating the numbers.
