If the callers need eighteen from twenty-eight and the defenders have securely captured eleven, only seventeen remain available to the callers. Under that unchanged target, the contract can no longer be reached.
Count secured points, not cards still lying in an unfinished trick. This arithmetic is useful for understanding the position, but complete the deal according to the agreed procedure. It does not authorise inventing a new early-stop rule or adding uncollected points to either side.
