The contract concerns card points, not simply how many tricks the partnership wins. A trick containing a jack, nine, ace and ten is worth seven; a trick of kings, queens, eights and sevens carries none.
Keep a running estimate of captured points while also following the lead. Taking several empty tricks may give control without fulfilling the call. When assessing the next play, identify which scoring cards are actually at stake rather than chasing another trick for its own sake.
