44 Game: The Fourth Card Ends a Lap; the Fifth Starts Another
Trace two laps of a four-seat deal. A numbered card record shows how to cross the lap boundary without skipping a player or dealing twice to one seat.

The fourth card reaches Sameer. “That is one round,” says the dealer, and puts the fifth beside it. A moment later, Aditi has one card while Sameer has two. Nobody changed seats. The error happened in the pause between counting one complete lap and starting the next. This 44 Game dealing exercise uses a few face-down cards to make that boundary visible.

Write one complete lap
Place four name slips clockwise: Aditi, Bala, Chitra, Sameer. Start with Aditi and deal one card to each seat. The record is card 1 to Aditi, 2 to Bala, 3 to Chitra, 4 to Sameer. One lap means that every seat has received one card. It does not mean that the person receiving the final card also receives the first card of the next lap.
Cross the boundary without a pause in the order
Continue the same circle: card 5 to Aditi, 6 to Bala, 7 to Chitra, 8 to Sameer. After eight cards, each seat has two. Read cards 4 and 5 together: Sameer, then Aditi. That little pair is the important transition. Recounting only the first four cards would never reveal why the next lap began incorrectly.

Count before looking at the faces
For this practice, stop with every card still face down. If Aditi has one and Sameer three after eight cards, equal distribution has failed. The count alone does not identify every misplaced card, so use the numbered dealing record to locate the mistake. If the record was not kept, gather and redeal the practice cards from a known starting point rather than claiming to know which hidden card moved.
Use the same check for a longer deal
In a four-person deal using all 52 cards, thirteen complete laps give each person thirteen cards. The final card goes to the fourth seat in the chosen order. That arithmetic checks equal distribution; it does not prove that the pack is complete or well shuffled. For a beginner doing the dealing, first practise two visible laps, then keep the same uninterrupted seat order as the hands grow.
