After a face-up table card is played, the card beneath is exposed for a future trick. It does not become a second card you may add to the current trick.

When two legal plays are otherwise comparable, opening a hidden card can provide useful information and future flexibility. The revealed card may also be unhelpful, so the benefit is access rather than a guaranteed winner. Finish the current trick before using the newly available option.
