789 JACKPOTS: Eight Stickers, but One Empty Space

A four-symbol collection puzzle separates how many items you hold from how many required types you have covered. Build a useful exchange list.

The collection card has four spaces: mango, kite, drum and star. Kavita brings eight stickers to fill it and expects an easy finish. The 789 JACKPOTS activity asks for one of each picture, not merely four stickers of any kind.

Lay out the actual collection

Spread her stickers out: four mangoes, two kites and two drums. There are eight physical stickers, but only three of the required picture types. The star space stays empty however neatly the other stickers are arranged.

Her brother has only four stickers: one mango, one kite, one drum and one star. He completes the card. The smaller collection succeeds because it covers all four requirements, while the larger one repeats three of them.

Put two headings on a sheet: total items and distinct required types. Kavita writes eight under the first and three under the second. Her brother writes four and four. The columns make the different achievements visible.

Two additions with different effects

Adding another mango would change Kavita's first number to nine without changing the second. Adding a star would make the numbers nine and four. Two single-sticker additions can have different effects on completing the card.

The group now prepares an exchange list. Kavita sets aside one mango, one kite and one drum for her card. The extras are three mangoes, one kite and one drum. Her request is specific: one star.

She exchanges an extra mango for a star with a friend who agrees to the trade. The total number of stickers remains eight; the number of required types rises to four. An unchanged total can still hide useful progress.

Completion depends on the requirement

The collection rule belongs at the top of the card. If a different activity asked for four matching pictures, Kavita's original mangoes would already qualify. A collection is complete only in relation to the requirement actually given.

For a second challenge, add a fifth required symbol to both collection cards. Do not call either collection complete until you check the new requirement. Finishing an earlier version does not automatically finish an expanded one.

The 789 JACKPOTS sticker exercise ends with a better question than “How many have you got?” Ask, “Which required picture is still missing?” That question leads directly to the useful next item instead of another pile of duplicates.
