Three different mappings
The printed identity tells us which card is present. A storage code lets software record it. A scoring rule assigns a value for a particular calculation. These mappings can be related without being identical.
For example, a teaching record might encode a queen as rank 12 while its scoring table assigns face cards 10 points. That is not a contradiction. Twelve identifies a rank in one representation; ten supplies a score under the stated table.
Do not repair unfamiliar notation by guessing
If an export uses 1, 0 or a letter in an unfamiliar way, obtain its legend. A value of 1 might be an internal identifier rather than a claim that an ace always scores one point. Guessing the mapping can change the hand before the rules are even applied.
A good example keeps the readable card face beside any code and states the scoring table separately. This lets a reviewer determine whether an error came from recognising the card, translating its code or assigning its value. Correct arithmetic cannot rescue a queen that was wrongly decoded as another card.
Decode first, total second
Suppose a record contains the rank labels Q and 4. Under a face-card value of ten, their score is fourteen. Treating Q's storage rank of twelve as its score produces sixteen instead. The arithmetic in both sums is simple; only one uses the stated scoring map. Keep the original labels so another reader can reconstruct the conversion.
