A Drawn Hand Does Not Automatically Count as a Win

A series needs rules for drawn games as well as decisive ones. The number of games played and the number of wins earned are not interchangeable totals.

A series needs rules for drawn games as well as decisive ones. The number of games played and the number of wins earned are not interchangeable totals.

Read a four-result sequence

From one participant's perspective, the results are win, draw, loss and win. That participant has two wins, the opponent has one, and one game is drawn. Four games played does not mean each participant won two.

What happens next depends on the series format. A draw might consume a scheduled game, require a replay or be handled through another explicit condition. A phrase such as best-of series is not enough if its treatment of draws remains unstated.

Keep the counters separate

Maintain games completed, wins for each participant and draws. If a replay is required, distinguish the replayed game from the scheduling slot it resolves. Otherwise a score sheet can reach a supposed game limit while the required decisive results are still missing.

The drawn game adds to games played, but it does not add a win to either participant. Whether the series continues depends on its stated endpoint, not on converting that draw into a convenient extra win.

Specify the endpoint before adding another result

Under a first-to-three-wins exercise, the participant with two wins has not finished, despite four games already appearing in the record. One further win would meet that endpoint; a further draw would not. Under a fixed four-game schedule, the same record could instead end the schedule. The result list is identical, but the outer condition differs.
