All Yono Games: An Evening with Three Different Kinds of Rules

Changing card games changes the objective. Use a short reminder to move between matching and trick-taking without carrying over the wrong habit.

The same pack moves from a matching activity to a trick-taking game. Within minutes, someone tries to collect equal ranks instead of following the led suit.

The equipment stayed familiar while the objective changed. That makes the old habit easy to carry into the new activity.

Write the new objective

Before switching, write three short prompts: what counts as progress, what a turn allows, and what ends the round. Answer them for the next game.

For the matching exercise, progress is completing specified pairs. For the trick-taking exercise, progress is winning tricks under its stated suit rules.

A third picture puzzle asks for a completed shape. Neither matching ranks nor collecting tricks supplies its completion condition.

Place the active objective card above the table and remove the old one. Keeping all three visible without labels can make the transition harder.

Ask for one legal next action

Let each player explain one legal next action before beginning. This catches a carried-over habit while there is still time to clarify it.

Avoid teaching the next game through misleading shortcuts such as “everything works the same”. Name the useful similarity and the important difference separately.

At the end, arrange the three objective cards side by side. Compare how the same equipment supported three different kinds of decisions.

The evening becomes easier to remember because each activity has its own purpose. A collection of games needs clear transitions as much as it needs variety.
