BetAce: The Ace That Made a Five-High Straight

Compare A-2-3-4-5 with 2-3-4-5-6, then test an ace-high example. Three open hands show exactly where the ace belongs in a straight.

A♠ 2♦ 3♣ 4♥ 5♠ looks unusual to somebody who has just learnt that an ace can be high. At the BetAce practice table, Nikhil points to the ace and puts this hand above 2♣ 3♦ 4♠ 5♥ 6♣. His sister does not ask him to memorise another winner. She asks him to read each sequence from its lowest card to its highest.

Read the ace at the low end

In A-2-3-4-5, the ace supplies the low end of the sequence. The highest card of that straight is five. The other hand runs from two to six, so it is six-high and ranks higher. The ace is not simultaneously a low card that completes the straight and a high card that wins the comparison. Its position in the chosen five-card sequence determines how this hand is read.

Put an ace-high straight alongside it

Now lay out 10♥ J♣ Q♦ K♠ A♥ as a separate hand. Here the ace sits after the king, making an ace-high straight. Nikhil can now see both permitted uses side by side. The cards between the endpoints matter: one hand needs two, three, four and five; the other needs ten, jack, queen and king. Saying “aces are high” leaves out the first arrangement.

The tempting wraparound

His sister offers Q♣ K♦ A♠ 2♥ 3♣ and asks him to arrange it into a straight. Moving the cards around does not produce five consecutive ranks under these poker rules. An ace can sit at either end of a straight, but it cannot join the high end of the rank order back to the low end. Keep this rejected example below the two valid ones, with the reason written beside it.

A comparison worth explaining aloud

For the final check, Nikhil returns to the original two hands. He says, “This one ends at five; that one ends at six.” His explanation now uses the straight rather than the most striking individual card. When revising poker hand rankings, a small set of contrasting hands can be more useful than repeatedly reading the same ranking list. Keep all five cards visible so the reason survives when the example changes.
