Classic Canasta: A Black Three on Top Stops the Pickup
A discard pile topped by a black three cannot be taken in Classic Canasta. A wild card on top also blocks pickup.

Your opponent discards 3♠. Even if useful kings lie underneath and you hold a strong king meld, you cannot take the pile on this turn. The top card controls access; attractive cards lower down do not create an exception.
A later natural discard may change the top-card condition. Recheck the resulting pile's status at that time rather than treating this block as permanent.
