Classic Canasta: Drawing from Stock Still Allows Melding
Taking the discard pile is not a prerequisite for melding in Classic Canasta. After drawing from stock, a player may make legal melds and then complete the turn with a discard.

Your partnership has already opened. You draw an unrelated ace from stock while holding three natural sevens. You may lay down those sevens; the drawn ace does not have to be part of the new meld.
Separate the source of the draw from the cards used for melding. Existing hand cards remain available for legal play after a stock draw.
