DD Game: A Redeal Begins Before the First New Card

Return every practice hand before a redeal. A forgotten card shows why shuffling the centre pile alone does not reset the table.

Everyone agrees to redeal the practice hand. Farid gathers the centre pile, shuffles and starts again. Then a friend notices one old card beside his notebook. The table has announced a fresh start without returning all the materials needed for it.

Collect before shuffling

For this exercise, a redeal means returning every dealt card to the practice pack. Each player checks the cards in hand, the space beneath the notebook and any cards set aside during explanation. The dealer then checks the expected inventory. Shuffling a short pack thoroughly does not make it complete.

The old arrangement can remain in a photograph if the group wants to discuss the misdeal. That record is not a live hand carried into the new round. Nobody keeps a favourable card because it was already allocated earlier. The agreed restart returns the whole exercise to its starting inventory.

Before the next deal, the group names the dealer and confirms the number of participants. These are setup facts, not things to infer from whoever is holding the cards. Only after the checks do players receive new hands and begin making private decisions.

Farid adds a short note beside the pack: “Collect, count, shuffle, deal.” It is useful because each step prepares the next. If a card appears after the new deal has begun, stop the practice and resolve the inventory openly. Quietly slipping it into a hand would create a second unrecorded change.
