Dhan Game: Four Shared Eights Still Leave a Fifth Card to Compare

Four of a kind does not use up all five places in an ordinary high-poker hand.

Editorial note: This is a conditional card-rule teaching example, not a verified description of the named platform.

Four of a kind does not use up all five places in an ordinary high-poker hand. When the four matching cards are shared, the remaining card can still distinguish the players.

Use a complete example

The community cards are 8♣, 8♦, 8♥, 8♠ and K♣. Player A has A♥ and 2♦. Player B has Q♥ and J♦.

A's best five are the four eights and the ace. B's best five are the four eights and the public king. B does not have to use the queen simply because it is a private card. Under the stated ranking, A's ace is the higher fifth card.

Do not compare unused extras

After the best five have been identified, A's two and B's queen and jack cannot be added as extra deciding cards. If both players' selected five were equal in the applicable comparison, an unused sixth card would not manufacture a difference.

The Dhan Game lesson is therefore not “private cards always matter” or “shared four of a kind always ties”. Both shortcuts fail to ask which fifth card is actually available to each player. Listing the selected five makes the comparison clear and keeps the result within the ordinary high-hand rules used by the example.
