DHAN7: Three Rounds Plus Eight Points Is Not Eleven Points

Label rounds, tricks and points before comparing a score record. Different units can describe the same session without being added together.

A notebook summary says “3 rounds, 8 points”. Someone rewrites it as eleven and calls that the total. The arithmetic is simple, but the addition has no defined meaning. The two numbers describe different things about the session.

Give the columns names

Rounds records how many rounds were completed. Points records the score produced by the activity’s scoring rule. If a trick-taking exercise also records tricks won, that needs a third column. A number’s size does not tell the reader which unit it belongs to.

The group returns to the individual round entries and checks the points column alone. It then counts completed rounds separately. This preserves both useful facts without inventing a combined measure. A reader can see how much was played and what score was recorded.

Two sessions with different numbers of rounds may need more context before their point totals are compared. Any per-round calculation should state its denominator and keep the underlying totals visible. It is a description of the record, not automatic proof that one player became better.

The revised summary uses full labels even in a short WhatsApp message. A few extra words prevent a later reader from adding unrelated quantities. Clear units are a small editorial habit with a large benefit: the score remains interpretable after the people who wrote it have forgotten the details.
