DiwaX: Four Hearts on the Board Were Still Only Four

An open Hold’em comparison checks each player’s best five cards after a fourth heart reaches the board, rather than awarding a flush to everyone.

Cover the players' cards for a moment. The Hold'em board reads A♥, J♥, 8♥, 3♥, 2♣. It looks overwhelmingly red. Our DiwaX card puzzle asks whether that visual impression is enough to announce that both players have a flush.

Uncover the private cards

Uncover the hands: Leela holds K♠, Q♠; Harish holds 7♥, 7♦. In this comparison, each player chooses the strongest five cards from their two private cards and the five-card board. A flush needs five cards of one suit.

Harish can use A♥, J♥, 8♥, 7♥, 3♥. Those are five hearts. His private diamond seven is irrelevant to this best hand. Having a pocket pair does not require him to keep that pair in his final selection.

Leela has only the four hearts on the board. Neither private card adds a fifth heart. She cannot borrow Harish's 7♥ just because it is now visible during the comparison. Opponents' private cards are not shared community cards.

Choose Leela’s actual five

Her best five are A♥, K♠, Q♠, J♥, 8♥, an ace-high hand without a pair. There is no ten to complete the high straight she might imagine. The board's colour has distracted her from counting actual ranks and suits.

Write the five selected cards below each name. Harish's flush outranks Leela's high-card hand. This is a hand-ranking conclusion about fully revealed cards; it says nothing about what either player should have assumed before the reveal.

Now consider a separate board with five hearts. That could make a flush available to both players, but private hearts might improve one player's best five. “Both have a flush” still would not automatically mean their flushes are equal.

Keep the boards separate

Return to the original five-card board before comparing again. Mixing a counterexample into the original scene is an easy way to create a phantom fifth heart. Keep each version complete and clearly separated.

For a quick check, ask which exact card supplies Harish's fifth heart and which card could supply Leela's. One answer names 7♥; the other has no candidate. A missing card cannot be replaced by the general feeling that the board is suited.

The DiwaX puzzle is solved by counting usable cards, not red symbols across the whole table. Community cards belong to both players; private cards do not. A five-card hand must be constructed from the cards each player may actually use.
