“Match the rank” is incomplete until the rule identifies the reference card. A fixed reference and a reference that changes after each reveal produce different answers from the same sequence.
Follow one short sequence
Begin with a seven as the reference. Reveal a two, then another two. Under a fixed-reference rule, neither two matches the original seven. Under a rolling-reference rule, the second two can match the previous two, provided the instructions say that each reveal replaces the reference for the next comparison.
The cards have not changed between the examples. The comparison target has. Calling the second two a match while still claiming to use the initial seven silently combines two different rules.
Specify the update event
A moving reference needs a clear update point. Does the newly revealed card become the reference before or after the current comparison? Updating first and comparing a card with itself would create a very different test. A usable instruction should describe the comparison first and the permitted update separately.
The reference must be known before judging each reveal. Compare the new card with that reference, record the result, and only then update the reference if the rule calls for it. Otherwise a convenient earlier match can be mistaken for the comparison the exercise actually asks for.
Write the reference before the result
For reveals 7, 2, 2, 7, a fixed initial reference produces a match only on the final reveal after setup. A rolling reference, updated after comparison, produces a match between the two twos. The final seven then compares with two and does not match. Do not count the setup card as matching itself; it establishes the reference rather than testing it.
