EK7 Card Puzzle: Did the Second Clue Tell You Anything New?

Use four eights to test three suit clues. Keep the possible cards visible and see why another sentence does not always narrow the answer.

Place 8♥, 8♦, 8♣ and 8♠ face up. One of these is the answer to an EK7 card puzzle. The clue-giver writes the chosen card on a folded slip before starting, so the answer cannot drift as the discussion changes. The learner’s task is to identify it from truthful clues, while showing which cards remain possible after every clue.

First clue: the card is red

Only 8♥ and 8♦ remain. Slide the club and spade aside, but leave them visible. This is a useful moment to name the suits: hearts and diamonds are both red, yet they are different suits. The learner has reduced four possibilities to two. Nothing in the first clue chooses between those two cards.

Second clue: it is not black

The learner reaches for another card to remove, then stops. Both surviving cards already satisfy that sentence. The second clue is true, but it has supplied no further reduction after the first. Ask the learner to point to a remaining card that it excludes. There is none. This is a check of the information provided, not a complaint about how the clue was worded.

Third clue: it is not a diamond

Now 8♦ moves aside and 8♥ remains. Open the folded slip to check that the clue-giver wrote the eight of hearts. If the slip names another card, inspect which clue was wrong rather than changing the answer silently. The written choice is what lets both people distinguish a deduction mistake from a mistake in preparing the puzzle.

Try the same clues in another order

Reset all four cards. “Not a diamond” alone leaves three possibilities; “red” then leaves only the heart. The clue that settled the earlier two-card choice does not settle the original four-card choice by itself. For another round, choose a different rank and prepare a fresh answer. Keep the reasoning about suits separate from the printed number so the learner can explain the process without memorising “eight of hearts”.
