EZ777: Show the Completed Choice, Then Change the Cards

Teach a small card-selection task with a complete worked example. Keep the unused card visible, then test understanding on a fresh arrangement.

The instruction says, “Choose three cards that form a natural sequence.” A beginner is shown 4♥, 5♥, 6♥ and 9♣, but no completed choice. The tutor keeps repeating the instruction. What the learner needs now is an example that connects those words to an actual selection.

Make one complete demonstration

The tutor places 4♥ 5♥ 6♥ together and leaves 9♣ visible outside the group. The selected ranks are consecutive and their suits match. Naming both conditions explains the choice. Keeping the unused card visible shows that the task asks for a selection, not for every supplied card to enter the group.

State the boundary of the exercise

This is a three-card selection problem, not a complete thirteen-card declaration. The unused card belongs to the supplied exercise materials. Its presence does not require inventing another group or pretending it has been discarded in a live game.

Now remove the model answer and offer 7♦, 8♦, 9♦ and Q♣. Ask the learner to select and explain the group. Changing the ranks and suit prevents simple copying of the first picture while preserving the relationship being taught.

If the learner selects correctly but cannot give the reason, revisit the two conditions. If the explanation is clear, try a case in which no valid three-card selection exists. The next step follows the learner’s response. A worked example should open a path to independent decisions rather than become a picture that must be memorised.
