FT7 Game: The Pause Lasted Longer than the Play

A paused practice timer measures active play differently from elapsed clock time. Reconstruct the intervals before calculating time left.

A practice timer starts at thirty seconds. After twelve seconds of play, the group pauses it while someone clears the table.

The pause lasts forty seconds. Under their stated procedure, paused time does not reduce the remaining practice time.

Read the paused countdown

Eighteen seconds therefore remain when they resume. The clock on the wall has moved, but the practice countdown has stayed still.

They play for seven more seconds and stop. Active play totals nineteen seconds, leaving eleven on the countdown.

Elapsed wall time is fifty-nine seconds: twelve, forty and seven. That answers a different question from active play duration.

Write pause and resume events into the record. A start and finish timestamp alone cannot recover active time if pauses occurred.

A different timer rule

Now imagine a rule where the countdown continues during interruptions. The same forty-second gap would have a different consequence.

Agree which timing procedure applies before the attempt. Do not switch between them after seeing who finished.

For practice at home, use a visible note saying RUNNING or PAUSED. Everyone can see which kind of time is currently being counted.

Before the second timed attempt, let the learner watch the display during one deliberate pause. The countdown should visibly stop if that is the stated arrangement. This checks that the demonstration and the written rule agree, rather than asking everyone to infer the timer behaviour afterwards.

The FT7 Game timing sheet now labels both totals. Neither number is wrong; they measure different intervals under an explicitly recorded procedure.
