Game Rummy: The Test Changed Too Many Things at Once

A rummy tutor redesigns a confusing example so that a learner’s answer reveals whether the difficulty concerns suit continuity or rank continuity.

Ravi shows 3♣, 5♦, 6♣ and asks whether it is a natural sequence. When his learner says no, he marks the lesson complete. The Game Rummy teaching note asks a follow-up: which condition did the learner actually notice?

Two faults in one picture

The group has two problems under the stated rule. The ranks have a gap, and the middle diamond breaks the single-suit condition. A correct “no” does not reveal whether the learner recognised one problem, both, or neither and simply guessed.

Ravi first presents 3♣, 4♣, 5♣ as the valid reference. The learner reads the ranks and suits aloud. This establishes that the symbols themselves are understood before the tutor starts diagnosing a rule misunderstanding.

Next comes 3♣, 4♦, 5♣. Only the suit condition is broken. The learner points to the diamond and explains why consecutive ranks alone are insufficient. That answer gives evidence about the suit distinction.

Isolate the rank condition

Then Ravi uses 3♣, 5♣, 6♣. The suit is consistent, but the ranks are not consecutive. The learner identifies the missing rank rather than pointing to a colour change that is not present.

Only afterwards does Ravi return to the original double-error example. Now the learner names both faults separately. The original “no” has become an explanation with two checkable reasons.

The point is not that every lesson must contain exactly three pictures. It is that a diagnostic example should make the intended contrast visible. Changing several properties can be useful later, once the individual conditions are understood.

Ask the learner to design a contrast

Ravi asks the learner to create a fresh invalid example with only one fault. Designing it requires more than recognising yesterday's picture. The learner must preserve one condition deliberately while breaking the other.

They keep this exercise to small groups. No conclusion about a complete declaration follows from classifying these three-card examples. The teaching objective is the relationship between consecutive ranks and a shared suit.

The Game Rummy note improves the tutor's question as much as the learner's answer. Before celebrating a correct response, ask what it demonstrates. A well-chosen contrast can reveal understanding that a simple tick beside “no” cannot.
