Gin Rummy: A Run Can Accept Layoffs at Either End
A valid run may be extended with consecutive cards of the same suit after a non-gin knock.

The knocker exposes 6♣–7♣–8♣. The opponent can lay off 5♣ at the low end or 9♣ at the high end. A diamond five does not fit merely because its rank is adjacent.
Test both the endpoint rank and the suit. The direction of extension is flexible, but the run's defining conditions remain unchanged.
