Gin Rummy: Layoffs Extend Melds, Not Deadwood Pairs
After an ordinary knock, the opponent may extend the knocker's melds. A pair left as deadwood is not an eligible meld.

After an ordinary knock, the opponent may extend the knocker's melds. A pair left as deadwood is not an eligible meld.
The knocker leaves two fours unmatched. The opponent holds another four. Adding it would create a set, but the layoff rule does not permit turning the knocker's deadwood pair into a new set this way.
Identify completed melds before testing layoffs. A useful-looking addition must still attach to an eligible group, not simply to two convenient exposed cards.
