Gin Rummy: The Knocker Cannot Lay Off in Return
The ordinary layoff opportunity belongs to the opponent of the knocker. It is not a mutual exchange phase.

After knocking, the player notices that one remaining card would extend a run the opponent has exposed. That observation does not create a right to reduce the knocker's deadwood by attaching it there.
Keep the two roles fixed through the comparison. Allowing reciprocal layoffs would change the final counts and could remove an undercut that the actual rules award.
