GoGo Rummy: Moving the Cards Changed the Picture, Not the Hand

A rummy layout exercise distinguishes a scrambled display of consecutive cards from a genuine missing rank that sorting cannot supply.

The row reads 8♥, 6♥, 7♥. Devika rejects it because the numbers do not rise from left to right. The GoGo Rummy practice asks her to distinguish a display order from the underlying group of cards.

Order on the table and order in the rule

Under the exercise's natural-sequence rule, the ranks must form a consecutive run in one suit. These three hearts can be arranged as 6♥, 7♥, 8♥. Their original physical placement does not remove that relationship.

Devika moves the cards and sees the run immediately. No draw, discard or substitution occurred. Sorting made an existing relationship easier to see; it did not create a new card or improve the inventory.

Her tutor now gives 6♥, 8♥, 9♥. Devika sorts them carefully, but the gap between six and eight remains. This time the problem is not visual order. The group lacks the rank needed for that proposed continuous run.

What sorting cannot repair

The contrast matters because “sort your cards” is useful advice with a limited job. It can reveal connections and gaps. It cannot repair every gap merely by moving the same cards around.

They photograph before and after sorting for each example. In the first, the final picture reveals a valid sequence already present. In the second, both pictures describe the same incomplete proposed group.

Devika labels her actions “rearranged” rather than “changed hand”. That wording keeps the inventory fixed. It also makes a later comparison with an actual draw clearer, because a draw really adds a new available card.

A fresh face-card example

For a new check, use J♣, 9♣, 10♣. The face card should not confuse the ordering: nine, ten, jack is consecutive. Ask for the explanation rather than merely accepting a tidier photograph.

Devika mixes the three cards again and explains their relationship before sorting them. She can now recognise the consecutive ranks while they are out of order. The tutor asks her to repeat the check with the incomplete example, where arranging the same cards still leaves the gap.

The GoGo Rummy note is about seeing what is already there. Sorting is an aid to inspection. Once the picture is tidy, still check the ranks, suit and remaining cards; neatness itself is not a rule condition.
