Hi Rummy: Adding an End Card Does Not Repair a Middle Gap

Lay out 4♥, 5♥ and 7♥.

Editorial note: This is a conditional card-rule teaching example, not a verified description of the named platform.

Lay out 4♥, 5♥ and 7♥. The cards share a suit, but the rank six is absent. Adding 8♥ extends the visible collection without filling that missing position.

Read the spaces between ranks

For a natural sequence in this example, every rank from the lowest included card to the highest must be present in order. With 4, 5, 7 and 8, the interval is four through eight. Six is still missing. Counting four cards or seeing two adjacent pairs does not make the entire collection consecutive.

Compare a different addition: 6♥. The cards 4♥, 5♥, 6♥ and 7♥ are now consecutive and share a suit. This demonstrates a structural correction, not advice about which card to pursue during a game. A real decision would involve other information and the actual rules.

Do not let a joker remain unnamed

If a wild card is used instead, write down the missing identity it represents and check whether that use is allowed. A joker beside the group is not an explanation by itself. Its role and the group's classification still need to be stated.

For Hi Rummy readers reviewing a proposed arrangement, the quick question is not “Does this look nearly complete?” It is “Which rank positions does this group require, and which physical cards fill them?” That method distinguishes a missing middle card from an optional extension at either end, without claiming that the named platform accepts a particular joker or group-length variant.
