IND9: Turn the Cards Back, Not Somewhere Else

Keep card locations stable after an unsuccessful memory match. Moving a revealed card changes the information players are trying to remember.

Ananya reveals a mango card near the top of a memory grid and a star near the bottom. They do not match. While turning them face down, the host moves the mango into a neater gap. The table looks tidier, but the information everyone just observed has changed.

Restore the same positions

Under this exercise’s rule, unsuccessful cards are covered again in their existing places. Remembering those places is part of the task. Sliding a card elsewhere without announcing a new arrangement makes a correct memory appear wrong on a later turn.

Use simple coordinates

The group labels rows A and B and numbers the columns. Ananya’s note can refer to A2 rather than “the one near my hand”. Coordinates help the host restore the same space and let players discuss the arrangement from different seats.

If a card is moved accidentally, pause before further reveals. Restore the known position if the group can establish it. If not, agree on a fresh layout and restart the memory exercise openly. Do not pretend the original information is still reliable when nobody knows where the card went.

The host tidies the area before the next round instead of during the current one. That keeps the learning challenge consistent. In a memory activity, the hidden picture and its location form the information being learnt; preserving only the picture is not enough.
