IS7 Game: Make the End of a Turn Visible

Pair a bell with a visible stop signal during timed practice. Explain when the turn ends before anyone relies on an unfamiliar cue.

A bell ends each short card-explanation turn. In a noisy room, one learner continues speaking after it rings. The host first assumes the learner ignored the limit. Then she realises the signal was not equally noticeable from every seat.

Demonstrate both cues

For the next practice, the host raises a clearly marked STOP card at the same time as the bell. Before timing anyone, she demonstrates the signal from each seat. The group agrees which cue governs if the two are accidentally out of sync, rather than deciding that after a disputed answer.

Place the visible cue where it can be seen without turning away from the cards. A signal behind the speaker may technically exist but still be unusable. Check lighting, distance and whether another person blocks the view. Ask the learner what works instead of inferring a need from appearance.

Keep assistance separate from scoring

Repeating the agreed stop instruction is not a hint about the card answer. If an unclear signal disrupts an attempt, record that and repeat the practice consistently. Do not quietly award different amounts of time based on how sympathetic a particular story sounds.

The host’s final check is practical: can everyone recognise the start and finish? A shared timing rule needs a shared way to perceive it. Once that is arranged, discussion can return to the explanation itself rather than to who happened to hear a bell through the room noise.
