IV7: A Hint Should Leave Something to Discover

Use progressively clearer hints on a card-grouping problem. Ask what help is needed before turning a small prompt into a complete solution.

“Just a small hint,” says Parul. Her friend immediately rearranges the whole practice hand. The answer is now visible, but Parul has lost the chance to locate the issue herself. The friend helped with the result while bypassing the very step Parul wanted to practise.

Begin by locating the difficulty

Ask which part feels uncertain. If Parul is unsure about one proposed set, the first hint can direct attention to that group. It need not identify the wrong card. Let her inspect the group and explain what she notices before adding more help.

If she remains stuck, name the relevant condition: compare the suits as well as the ranks. This gives a more precise search task while leaving the actual comparison to her. A full demonstration is another level of support, appropriate when requested or when the smaller prompt has not made the rule understandable.

Do not disguise an answer as a hint

“Move that heart seven into the other group” supplies an action, not a small observation. Label it as a worked correction if that is what the learner needs. Honest labels make it easier to understand what was completed independently.

Parul tries a fresh example after the explanation. The tutor notes which level of help was useful and whether it is still needed. That creates a practical next step. The aim is not to ration encouragement, but to give enough guidance without removing every decision the learner came to practise.
