IX7: You Can Finish with Hint Cards Still Unused
Treat “up to three hints” as an allowance, not a checklist. Decide whether help is needed from the explanation you can currently give.

The exercise allows up to three hints. After using one, Sameera explains every proposed group clearly. She then asks for two more hints because she thinks the remaining allowance must be used before she can finish. The support limit has become an imagined part of the task.

Read what completion requires
The card exercise is complete when its stated answer and explanation requirements are met. It does not require every available hint to be consumed. “Up to three” permits zero, one, two or three requests under the agreed counting method.
The tutor asks Sameera to explain the group she was previously unsure about. Her explanation is now clear, so there is no need to manufacture another doubt. If a real uncertainty remains, she can use another hint without treating that as a failure.

Separate two kinds of records
The answer record shows what she concluded and why. The help record shows the support used during that attempt. A correct answer with help and a correct independent answer may inform different next steps, but unused hint cards are not unfinished questions.
For the next example, Sameera starts by trying the task and naming any specific uncertainty. This makes help responsive rather than automatic. The useful decision is whether another prompt would advance understanding, not whether an allowance can be exhausted before the session ends.
