Jaiho 777: An Ace on the Table Was Not Enough to Take the Trick

Two arrangements of the same four cards reveal why the led suit matters in a Call Break comparison. Follow the order before comparing ranks.

“But I played an ace.” Farhan points to A♦ while his sister collects the four cards. Their Jaiho 777 replay begins with a useful question: which suit was led? The largest-looking card cannot answer that on its own.

For this table's Call Break rules, players follow the led suit when they can. A player without that suit must use a spade if available. With no spade in the trick, the highest card of the led suit wins.

Hearts lead the first trick

Meena leads 8♥. Farhan, holding neither hearts nor spades, discards A♦. Kavya follows with Q♥ and Ishan with 10♥. The four cards are 8♥, A♦, Q♥ and 10♥, in that order.

Kavya wins with Q♥. Hearts were led and no spade appeared. Farhan's ace is a legal discard under the stated holdings, but it is not a heart and cannot win this trick merely by having a high rank.

Meena draws a small arrow beside the first card instead of circling the ace. This marks the information everyone overlooked. The first card establishes the suit that the other ordinary cards must compete within.

A second, separately defined position

Now build a separate position with those same four cards: Farhan has the lead and starts with A♦. The other three players have no diamonds or spades, so they discard 8♥, Q♥ and 10♥ respectively.

Farhan wins this second trick. Diamonds are now the led suit, and his ace is the only diamond played. The remaining holdings have been stated to make every discard legal; this is not a claim that the first deal could simply be reordered.

The comparison keeps the visible ranks fixed while changing the leader and the supporting hand conditions. It separates two questions: whether a card is legal to play, and whether that legal card wins.

Cover the names, keep the arrow

Before checking the answer, cover the players' names and leave only the first-card arrow. Can you identify the relevant suit in both arrangements? Then uncover the names and assign each trick to its winner.

Farhan's revised explanation is short: “My ace lost when hearts were led; it won when diamonds were led.” That is the sentence to carry away from the Jaiho 777 replay. It names the condition that changed the result.
