Jaiho91: Six Connected Cards Still Produce a Five-Card Straight

A Hold’em board and private cards offer six consecutive ranks; the exercise chooses the highest legal five instead of inventing a six-card category.

Iqbal lays out every connected rank he can find: four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. The line looks impressive. Our Jaiho91 Hold'em puzzle asks him to remove one card before naming his final hand.

Seven available cards

The board is 4♣, 5♦, 6♠, 7♥, K♣. Iqbal's private cards are 8♦ and 9♠. In this exercise the best hand uses exactly five cards from the seven available, with no requirement to use a particular number of private cards.

One candidate is 4♣, 5♦, 6♠, 7♥, 8♦: an eight-high straight. Another is 5♦, 6♠, 7♥, 8♦, 9♠: a nine-high straight. Both have five consecutive ranks, but the second is higher.

Iqbal keeps the nine-high version and leaves out 4♣ and K♣. The king is the highest individual card available, yet it does not belong in his strongest five-card combination. Selecting high cards independently would break the straight.

A longer run is not a new category

His friend Farid wants to call the six connected ranks a “long straight”. They can use that phrase informally to describe the available run, but it is not an extra hand category or a reason to compare six cards against somebody else's five.

The practical task is selection, not addition. Having more candidate cards can improve which five you choose. It does not expand the number of cards in the final hand beyond the game's comparison rule.

To check understanding, cover 9♠. Among the remaining six cards, the best straight ends at eight. Restore the nine and the best straight ends at nine. This is a separate availability check, not a claim that a player may discard private cards from a live deal.

Keep the mixed suits visible. None of these candidate straights is a straight flush. A neat line of ranks does not imply a matching suit, just as a matching suit alone would not establish consecutive ranks.

Write only the final five

Iqbal writes only the chosen five beneath his name. The rejected four and king remain nearby, crossed out for the comparison. A reader can therefore verify both the available inventory and the actual hand used in the verdict.

The Jaiho91 puzzle ends with a smaller display than it began with. That is progress. The relevant achievement is choosing the strongest permitted five, not showing the longest row of related cards or the largest number of attractive possibilities.
