Max Rummy: The Ace Could Choose an End, Not Join Both Ends

Compare A-2-3, Q-K-A and K-A-2 under an explicitly stated rummy rule, without confusing a valid small group with a completed hand.

“An ace can be high or low, so this should work.” Tara puts K♥, A♥, 2♥ in a row. Her Max Rummy practice card contains a useful rule remembered too broadly. Her father asks her to draw the rank line she is following.

Two permitted ends

For this exercise they agree that A-2-3 and Q-K-A of one suit are valid sequences, but ranks do not wrap around. The ace can occupy the low end or the high end of a sequence. It does not connect king back to two.

Tara draws A, 2, 3, continuing through Q and K. Her king sits at one end, while ace and two sit at the other. They are not three consecutive positions on that line. The shared heart suit solves only one part of the requirement.

She redraws the line with ace high: 2, 3, onward to Q, K, A. King and ace now touch, but two is at the opposite end. Choosing a high ace has not moved the two beside it.

One ordering at a time

Her father places Q♥, K♥, A♥ separately. This group follows the high-end order. Then he places A♣, 2♣, 3♣ on another part of the table. That follows the low-end order. Each example chooses one consistent ordering.

Tara notices that her original argument borrowed K-A from one ordering and A-2 from another. Each pair could appear somewhere valid, yet combining them did not produce one permitted three-card run. Local connections were not enough.

They mark K♥, A♥, 2♥ as invalid under this exercise's rule. They do not argue that every game called rummy must use every ace convention identically. Before applying the lesson elsewhere, read the chosen format's actual rule.

Next Tara proposes J♦, Q♦, K♦, A♦. Under the same high-ace convention it is a continuous four-card run. The length has changed, but the ordering has not wrapped. This checks that she learnt the condition rather than memorised two pictures.

A group is not the whole hand

One completed sequence still does not settle an entire hand. Their practice uses small groups to isolate the ace issue. A declaration must meet all the selected format's requirements and account for the remaining cards as well.

Tara's Max Rummy note becomes shorter and more precise: “Choose the permitted end; do not make a circle.” She keeps both rank lines beside it. They show where her original argument crossed from one convention into the other.
