MGM Game: The Nearby Square Was Not the Next Square

Follow a marked tabletop route instead of jumping to a visually nearby square. A short practice track makes the movement rule inspectable.

A marker sits at the end of a row on a homemade route board. The square below is close enough to touch, so Kiran moves straight down. Her partner stops her. Their arrows send the route around the outside edge first. Physical closeness and the next permitted step are different things.

Trace the actual track

The practice route is labelled A, B, C, D, E and F in order, even though the cards are arranged in two rows. From C, the next step is D wherever D has been placed. The marker cannot choose another neighbouring card simply because it shortens the movement.

They trace one full journey with a finger before moving the marker. At every bend, they say the next label aloud. This is especially helpful when introducing a board with a printed track: the layout can put unrelated stretches beside one another.

Do not import a shortcut

If the group wants a connection from C directly to F, it must be part of a separately stated route. Drawing that connection changes the exercise. It is not an interpretation to add midway through a turn because someone dislikes the longer path.

Kiran redraws the arrows more clearly and keeps the route list beside the board. Her next move can be checked without an argument about which square looks nearest. The same reading habit helps when learning a familiar-looking board with a different path: inspect its own route before relying on a remembered movement pattern.
