MPL GAME: The Score Sheet That Claimed Fourteen Tricks

A Call Break scorekeeper distinguishes calls, tricks won and points, then uses the thirteen-trick total to locate a recording error.

The argument starts after the cards are packed away. A practice sheet filed with our MPL GAME reading notes credits the four Call Break players with four, four, three and three tricks. Everyone remembers playing a normal thirteen-card deal.

Fourteen cannot fit thirteen tricks

Four players receiving thirteen cards each produce thirteen four-card tricks in that deal. The listed wins total fourteen. This is a consistency problem in the record, regardless of which scoring formula the friends intend to apply afterwards.

The sheet has three columns: call, tricks won and points. Neeraj copied a number from the call column into the tricks column when someone interrupted him. A promised target and an achieved count can look identical when both are small integers.

He does not immediately subtract one from the largest entry. The total tells him something is wrong, but it does not identify the responsible row. Automatically changing a player's four to three would manufacture a plausible total without verifying the history.

Rebuild the winner tally

The group checks their separate trick tally. It lists winners in order as A, B, C, D, A, B, C, D, A, B, C, A, B. Counting those entries gives A four, B four, C three and D two.

They correct D's tricks-won entry from three to two. D's call remains three, because that records the target announced earlier. Erasing it too would hide the difference the score sheet was meant to preserve.

Only now do they calculate points using their agreed scoring rule. They do not add point values and expect that sum to be thirteen. Penalties and overtrick conventions can make point totals behave differently from a count of physical tricks.

What the total can and cannot prove

Neeraj adds a small check beneath the tricks column: total thirteen. It is a useful warning, not a complete audit. Two compensating errors could still add to thirteen, so a correct sum does not prove every individual row is accurate.

For a reader's exercise, imagine the tally is missing. You can report the inconsistency but cannot confidently identify D as the error. Preserve the disputed entries and seek another record rather than quietly inventing a corrected distribution.

This MPL GAME scorekeeping story ends with three distinct meanings left intact: what was called, what was won and how it was scored. A good sheet makes them easy to compare without letting one number impersonate another.
