MQM BET: The Rule on the Back of the Card

A rule on the back changes which number can be chosen. Read the complete instruction before ranking the visible options.

A group sees the instruction “Choose the largest number” and immediately points to nine. On the back of the instruction card is another condition.

The available numbers are 3, 6 and 9. The second line says, “Choose only from the even numbers.” Now the qualifying choice is six.

Nine remains the largest displayed number. It simply falls outside the permitted candidates. Removing it from consideration does not change its value.

Test the method, not just the answer

Try the same instruction with 2, 5 and 8. Eight qualifies and is largest. A correct result can hide an incomplete checking process.

Ask the solver to name the eligible cards before giving the final answer. That short intermediate step makes the method visible.

For a harder version, offer 3, 5 and 9. No card qualifies. The instruction needs a “no eligible choice” outcome rather than a forced answer.
