S333: A Smaller Number Can Be the Better Score

Identical finished boards can rank differently when the task is to use fewer moves. Read the objective before comparing solutions.

Two players finish the same sliding puzzle. Saira uses seven moves; Harish uses eleven. Both have identical completed boards.

The stated challenge rewards fewer legal moves. Saira's seven therefore ranks better than Harish's eleven.

Read whether more is better

Harish had treated the larger number as more points. The number was a cost to minimise, not a reward to maximise.

Write “moves used: lower is better” above the results. A bare number invites the wrong comparison habit.

Check that both players started from the same arrangement. Different starting puzzles would weaken this direct comparison.

Also verify that every move followed the rule. An illegal shortcut does not qualify just because it uses fewer steps.

Change the objective explicitly

For a second challenge, reward collected symbols instead. Higher may now be better under that different scoring rule.

Keep the two leaderboards separate or label their measures clearly. Seven moves and eleven symbols are not competing values of one measure.

Saira records her move sequence so others can inspect how the count was obtained. The explanation supports the result.

Keep the objective beside the result column on the worksheet. A heading such as “moves used: fewer is better” prevents a later reader from treating the count as points earned. If the activity changes to a different objective, begin a new result column rather than merging the two measures into one ranking.

The S333 lesson begins with the objective before the number. Knowing whether to minimise or maximise is part of reading a score correctly.
