SH7: The Blank Box Was Not a Wrong Explanation

Separate an unanswered card question from an incorrect answer. A small review log helps choose the right follow-up exercise.

The worksheet has six card questions. Four have answers, and two are blank. A reviewer marks both blanks wrong and concludes that the learner does not understand sets. But one picture was unreadable on the learner’s phone, and the other question was never reached before the session ended.

Ask what happened first

The reviewer keeps the original sheet and adds a status beside each blank: image not read, or not attempted. Those entries do not claim the learner knew the answer. They simply avoid attributing an unobserved mistake to a particular rule.

One of the four completed answers really does contain a suit error. That answer supplies evidence for a focused explanation. The unreadable picture instead needs a clearer image, and the unattempted question needs an opportunity to be tried. Treating all three as the same problem would waste the next session.

If a scoring system counts blanks as zero, record that score without confusing it with a diagnosis. A numerical convention can treat several outcomes alike while a teaching review still distinguishes their causes. The score and the learning note have different jobs.

On the next sheet, the learner can mark “cannot read” or “not reached” without inventing an answer to fill the space. The tutor still checks actual attempts carefully. A more informative record is neither generous marking nor an excuse; it is a better basis for deciding what help is needed.
