Share Slots: The Group Chat Was Not a Random Sample

A card-group scrapbook shows why selected memorable reveals cannot establish how often ordinary hands occur across all sessions.

Six spectacular poker hands fill the chat in a week. “Strong hands happen all the time,” says Naveen. For this Share Slots reading, the cards themselves are not disputed. The question is which ordinary hands never reached the chat.

The collection was selected

The friends had agreed to post only unusual reveals: a straight flush, a dramatic tie or an unexpected final card. The scrapbook therefore selects for memorable events before anybody begins counting what it contains.

Naveen counts four full houses among ten saved images. That correctly describes the saved images, assuming his classifications are right. It does not establish that four in ten hands played by the group were full houses.

The missing denominator is all eligible hands, including ordinary ones that nobody photographed. Without that total and a consistent recording process, the image collection cannot provide the frequency Naveen wants to estimate.

One hand can appear twice

Reena points out that one exciting hand may have been posted twice by different people. They compare timestamps and card layouts before counting images as separate events. A forwarding action is not another dealt hand.

They preserve the scrapbook for its original purpose: sharing interesting moments. A collection can be enjoyable and useful without serving as a statistical sample. The problem begins when its purpose is silently changed.

For a future observation exercise, they define a fixed set of practice deals and record every eligible result, including unremarkable ones. They also record the game and rules, since mixing different formats would make category frequencies hard to interpret.

A complete record still has limits

Even a complete small record would describe that exercise with uncertainty. It would not justify a guaranteed forecast for the next hand. Better recording repairs one problem; it does not remove every limit on inference.

Naveen rewrites his caption: “Four of the ten distinct hands we chose to share were full houses.” It is a narrower sentence, but every part is supported by the collection he actually checked.

The Share Slots scrapbook remains colourful. What disappears is the unsupported generalisation. Before learning from a feed of impressive outcomes, ask who chose the examples, which outcomes were omitted and whether several posts describe the same event.
