Spades: A Two Can Beat an Ace
A legally played spade outranks cards from other suits in a trick. The trump's printed rank need not be high.

A legally played spade outranks cards from other suits in a trick. The trump's printed rank need not be high.
Clubs are led and A♣ is currently winning. A player with no clubs plays 2♠. If no higher spade follows, the two wins the trick. The club ace remains the highest club but no longer the highest eligible winner.
Check that the spade play was legal before ranking it. Trump strength does not excuse failing to follow a suit still held.
