Spades: Successful Nil Can Accompany a Failed Partner Bid
Nil and the partner's ordinary bid are separate scoring components in the basic version.

Nil and the partner's ordinary bid are separate scoring components in the basic version.
The Nil player takes no tricks, earning the team's hundred-point Nil bonus. The partner bids four but takes three, losing forty on that contract. Together the hand changes the score by sixty, before any other applicable adjustment.
Do not describe the whole hand as simply successful or failed. Name each commitment and calculate it separately so the combined result remains explainable.
