Taking the Top Discard Exposes a New Top Card
In a practice game, players may take only the top card of the discard pile. This is a rule about a changing position, not a permanent label attached to one card.

In a practice game, players may take only the top card of the discard pile. This is a rule about a changing position, not a permanent label attached to one card.
Suppose the pile has 3♣ at the bottom, 8♦ above it and Q♥ on top. A legally takes Q♥ into the hand. The remaining top card is now 8♦. If A then discards 5♠ onto that pile, 5♠ becomes the top card before the next player acts.
The next player cannot take 8♦ merely because it was briefly exposed between those actions. Under the top-card-only rule, the relevant card is the top one at the moment of the permitted draw. The intermediate view and the completed turn show different pile states.
Trace each transfer in order: remove the accepted pickup, reveal the card below, then place the accepted discard on top. That sequence explains availability without adding a right to search through the pile or collect an earlier exposed card.
