Top One Table Story: The Spade Arun Could Not Save

Follow a three-trick Call Break ending in which following suit, using trump and taking the lead decide whether Arun reaches his call.

“Save the spade for the end,” Arun told himself. In this Top One table story, his friends replay the last three tricks of a Call Break deal. He has already won two tricks against a call of four. Two more would complete his target.

Before placing the cards, Leena writes their agreed convention: follow the led suit when possible; otherwise play a spade if you have one. The highest spade wins; without a spade, the highest card of the led suit wins. The winner leads next.

Three cards at each seat

The order is Arun, Bela, Chirag, Dev. Their remaining cards are Arun: A♥, 2♠, 3♦; Bela: 2♥, K♣, 4♦; Chirag: 3♥, 2♣, K♦; Dev: 4♥, 3♣, 5♦. The cards are exposed only for this replay.

Arun starts with A♥. Everyone has a heart and must follow. His ace wins, bringing his total to three. “Now I need just one,” he says. Leena asks him to play the next trick before describing the ending.

Arun leads 3♦. Bela plays 4♦, Chirag K♦ and Dev 5♦. All four follow diamonds. Chirag wins. Arun's plan to keep control has failed at this point: possessing a trump did not let him ignore his diamond.

The spade becomes compulsory

Chirag now leads 2♣. Dev follows with 3♣. Arun has no club; his only remaining card is 2♠. Bela plays K♣. The low spade wins over every club, so Arun reaches four tricks exactly.

“You did save it,” Bela says. Arun shakes his head. He had imagined choosing a clever moment for the spade. In the last trick he had no choice at all. The earlier suit obligations had brought him to that ending.

Leena records the winner of each trick: Arun, Chirag, Arun. That tiny record explains more than a list of high cards. The diamond king changed who led the final suit; the club king could not defeat a trump.

Replay the legal actions

For a second reading, cover the result and name each legal play in order. Do not replace a card midway through the deal. If you want a different outcome, create a separate, fully specified hand and check its cards again.

The useful detail in this Top One replay is not a promise that a small spade will rescue a call. It is the route by which the spade became compulsory. Arun finishes the exercise by describing that route, without calling it a prediction.
