Win Rummy: Returning the Same Card or the Same Card Face?
In a two-pack hand, two cards can both be 9♦ while remaining separate physical objects.

Editorial note: This is a conditional card-rule teaching example, not a verified description of the named platform.
In a two-pack hand, two cards can both be 9♦ while remaining separate physical objects. A restriction on returning a newly picked card must make clear whether it refers to the object or to its rank-and-suit identity.
Two readings, different outcomes
Label the copies 9♦-A and 9♦-B. The player already holds B and picks A from the open pile. A teaching rule prohibiting the return of that exact picked card would address A. A broader rule prohibiting a discard with the same face would address both A and B.
The example is not an instruction to exploit wording. It shows why an explanation that simply says “you cannot return the nine” can be ambiguous.
Preserve the source of the draw
Rules may distinguish taking from the open pile from drawing unseen from the stock. Do not apply an open-pile condition to every draw without checking its scope. The record should identify the source and the specific card acquired.
For a Win Rummy rules question, obtain the full clause before deciding which of the two copies is restricted. A valid explanation should survive a change in screen order: if the hand is sorted, the identity of the picked physical card must not silently switch to whichever nine is displayed first. Copy labels make the ambiguity visible instead of hiding it under a shared face.
