A points total needs two decisions: which cards count, and what each counted card is worth. Adding the values of all thirteen cards first can produce the wrong answer if the scoring rule excludes valid groups.

Use this explicit scoring model for the example: the required two sequences, including one pure sequence, must already be present; completed valid groups are excluded; number cards count at face value; and A, J, Q and K count ten each. No cap or special declaration penalty applies. These assumptions define the calculation rather than a platform's published score policy.

Start with the full inventory

Use this hand:

2♥ 3♥ 4♥ / 7♣ 8♣ 9♣ / Q♠ Q♥ Q♦ / A♦ K♠ 6♠ 5♦

The two sequences account for six cards. The three queens form a set. Under the assumptions above, those nine cards are excluded from the count. Four cards remain: A♦, K♠, 6♠ and 5♦.

Their total is 10 + 10 + 6 + 5 = 31 points. This is a penalty-style exercise, so a smaller counted total is better; it is not a reward balance or cash amount.

Why counting every face card fails

The queens each have a nominal value of ten, but nominal value does not mean they must enter this calculation. They belong to the valid set that the stated rule excludes. Adding another thirty for those queens would give 61, answering a different scoring question.

The reverse error is also possible. A♦ and K♠ cannot be removed from the count just because they are high cards or sit beside grouped cards. Neither belongs to a valid group in this arrangement.

What changes if the second sequence breaks?

Replace 8♣ with 8♦. The row 7♣–8♦–9♣ is no longer a natural sequence. The hand no longer meets the starting condition used for the 31-point calculation. Do not keep the same exclusions and merely add eight. A different rule may govern a hand lacking its second sequence; that rule must be supplied before a new result can be calculated.

The final record should show the counted cards, their individual values and the resulting total. That lets another reader reproduce the arithmetic. A platform's cap, invalid-declaration charge or treatment of incomplete sequence requirements belongs in a separate verified rule, not in a number borrowed from another app.
