X89: Ask for a Diamond Before Declaring the Rule
Two heart cards fit both “red cards” and “hearts only”. Choose a test card that separates those explanations in a hidden-rule practice game.

The host accepts 3♥ and 9♥ into a small practice pile. Aman says the hidden rule is “red cards”. Isha says it is “hearts only”. Both explanations fit everything shown. Asking for another heart would add an example without settling their disagreement.

Choose a useful next card
They propose 5♦. The red-card explanation predicts acceptance; the hearts-only explanation predicts rejection. Before the host responds, they write those predictions beside the two guesses. Now the reply will have a specific meaning rather than becoming a reason invented afterwards.
The host accepts the diamond. That rejects the hearts-only guess within their two proposed explanations. It does not prove that no other rule could fit the examples: “red cards below ten”, for instance, still fits these three cards. The learners keep the surviving explanation as a working idea, not a finished discovery.

Make the host accountable too
The host writes the actual rule on a folded slip before play and follows it consistently. If an answer conflicts with that slip, the group corrects the answer. Changing the rule to outsmart every new test would turn a reasoning exercise into an unwinnable guessing contest.
For the next test, Aman suggests a red king to examine the proposed rank limit. Isha records rejected cards as carefully as accepted ones. Their notebook now tells a story of choices that separated explanations. Its value is in why each card was selected, not in the number of guesses they managed to make.
