YY GAME: The Explanation Needed One More Link

Connect a card observation to the rule it supports. “Same rank” alone is an incomplete explanation of a valid natural set.

The practice note reads: “All three are sevens, therefore this is a valid set.” The cards are 7♥, 7♣ and 7♦, so the proposed group is fine under the stated natural-set rule. The explanation, however, leaves out a condition that matters in other examples.

Supply the missing reason

The ranks match and the suits are different. Writing both observations connects the cards to the full condition being used. A correct conclusion in one example can conceal an incomplete explanation if the omitted condition happens to be satisfied automatically by the picture.

To expose the gap, the tutor asks whether the same sentence would also approve three same-rank cards with a repeated suit. “All are sevens” would still be true. The sentence therefore cannot carry the entire judgment on its own. It needs the suit check as well.

Keep the repair short

There is no need to turn the note into a long rulebook. “Same rank, three different suits” provides the missing link for this three-card example. The tutor then asks the learner to identify each suit rather than simply repeat the repaired sentence from memory.

The final review checks whether the reasoning would reject a relevant wrong example as well as accept the current right one. That is a stronger test of an explanation than asking whether it sounds plausible next to a successful result.
